Measure furniture against the whole building route

A piece that fits the destination room may not fit the route used to reach it. 3 min read.

On this page

Take measurements before deciding that a large item is ordinary transport. Keep the dimensions of the piece alongside the narrow points at both properties. The purpose is to make an assessment possible, not to prove that a difficult lift will work. Send these measurements to our movers in Verdun for an access assessment.

Record the item as it is now

Measure width, height and depth, then identify parts that might be removable. Distinguish what you know from what you assume can be dismantled. Note loose pieces, existing damage and manufacturer information where useful.

For a sofa or large cabinet, include the shape as well as the largest dimensions. For a piano or pool table, name the item separately in the request. Do not make it smaller through improvised dismantling before the handling has been assessed.

  • Record dimensions and known removable components.
  • Identify special items independently of the room count.

Follow the actual carrying path

Measure door openings, hallways, landings and stair turns from the room to the loading entrance. At a building elevator, check its opening and interior, along with access before and after it. Include thresholds and outside steps.

Repeat at delivery rather than relying on the pickup measurements. Ask management which route is permitted. An entrance that looks wide from the street may not be the one available for the move.

  • Check turns, not only straight openings.
  • Measure the authorized route at both ends.

Use measurements for a conversation

Share a concise set of measurements and ask where to send photographs during follow-up. Explain anything that is hard to capture, such as a sloping approach or a tight turn. Good information helps the team assess crew and equipment needs.

A measurement set is not a safe-lifting instruction or a guarantee of feasibility. Review the handling requirements before booking and confirm whether a different specialist is needed. Keep the route clear once the arrangement is agreed.

  • Ask what additional information will help.
  • Confirm preparation responsibilities before dismantling.

The useful takeaway

Measure the object and the complete permitted route, then use those details for assessment rather than an improvised trial lift.
